GPa's Training Kicks In.
« on: January 12, 2010, 04:05:04 PM »
After all these years!!! :yikes:

As many of you know, when GPa was still working one of my duties was that of a training officer for the State of Florida and that I taught all kinds of stuff in the Academies for new recruits and in the 'In Service' training sessions. One of those things that I taught was defensive tactics and GPa had to go to school and learn all kinds of martial arts stuff at the age of 62...  but that's a whole 'nother story.  :up2some:

Anyways, one of the basic principles of martial arts is the use of sound whenever you engage someone and that's why in all the Bruce Lee style movies you'll see them making all those funny yells when they are whacking on each other. So in our training of the recruits for the state we would have them use yells like, "GET BACK!", or "STOP!" to go along with their blocks or punches.

Well, although it's been over six years since my last training session and even-though I've not really though of any of that stuff very much at all over the years, it seems that my training is still very much in play! This morning I was getting ready to go to my doctors office for my H1N1 flu shot and had started the truck and had the air hose all reeled out to put some air into one of the tires. So once that was finished I went back into the garage and started rolling up the air hose. At this point it's important to remember that the truck is running just outside the open garage door and with the noise that the Cummings diesel engine makes there is no way that I would hear anyone drive up, or walk up.

So... I'm rolling up that air hose, with my back to the open garage door, when suddenly I hear, "Excuse me sir"
In a split instant, before he's even finished saying it, I whirl and face the garage door and yell, "HEY!!!"... now those of you who have heard me do a yell like that know that when the full bass and full volume of my voice kicks in it can cause the windows in a building to vibrate and trust me when I say, this was one of those times.

So this young man, maybe in his 30's, jumps half way out of his skin and about two steps back and sez, "I'm sorry sir, I didn't mean to scare you." and I'm thinking,"Huh?" Actually, it happened so quickly that there was no time for me to be scared.  :08:

Turns out he's just needing directions to the home of one of my neighbors and after getting those directions he left very quickly. I did notice that when he went to the neighbors house he didn't get out, instead he sent the lady who was with him to their door.  :bigthumb:

Life just has a way of laying those funny stories in you lap... gotta luv it.  :disted:

LOL! I would not trust the neighbors on your block either. LOL

My dad used to train police recruits and prison guards in and around Philadelphia. He retired recently. ;)

That's what they teach kids now. Hopefully, it will frighten the attacker and shorten the length of the fight. Back when I was learning we just yelled like Bruce Lee (my idol). LOL

btw, I have a collection of his movies.  :08:

I just recently got back into it now and again with the kids after about a 30 year layoff. You be surprised at what you don't forget...even if you can't kick your legs up high enough.  :2funny:
