The steak was a bit larger than I thought so I only ate half of it. I also made my Drunken Mushrooms and Onions to go along with it. I put steak sauce on the first half.
I just finished making this. I was feeling VERY lazy today and kind of dragged it out to an "all-day" process.
The gravy was pretty good but I thought it was a tad bland. It reminded me of a homemade cream of mushroom soup but thicker. To bolster the flavors I added a splash more of soy sauce and sherry. I then added some onion and garlic powders along with a dash or two of worcestershire sauce. Then it started tasting worthy of putting on the other half of my steak.
Two things... One, it wasn't the same color as in the image on food52.com. This makes me wonder if I did something wrong or could have used a better ingredient.
Two, after some reading I found out that you should strain the mushrooms after steeping them in the water. Some methods say to use a coffee filter while others say to use cheesecloth. I had some cheese cloth, my first choice, but Lealer must've moved it or used it.
Since I have a ton of coffee filters for my teas I used one of those instead. Boy was that a mistake! It took forever for it to seep through the filter!
No matter what you use you must strain it well to keep the sediment out of the finished product. I know now to use cheesecloth next time...after I buy more...
