ADK Portal
« on: June 13, 2010, 03:20:26 AM »
Well, since TP is going to close I guess I'll need to start test other portals for a suitable replacement, eventually. I've stumbled on to this one and it seems to work very well. It also has a pretty cool editor.

You can see it on my test site here:

I've not tried that one yet, but may do so soon.

My outlook on the portal/cms software's that are available hasn't really changed after Bloc's announcement about future development of TinyPortal and the TP support site. If he closes the TP.net site and moves all support to the SMF site that will cause the TP support to fall off by a lot and the sites that use portals will begin to move to the other portals even more so, but for those who are willing to, or able to, live with that diminished level of support I see TP being viable far into the future... as in years possibly. It all comes down to the SMF versions and whether it changes to a point where TP won't work with it anymore.

I've tried most all of the portals and just do not see any of them as being a good replacement for TP. Of those that are currently out there my pick might be SimplePortal, but I don't really like any of them because they all fall short in a comparison to TP.

We'll see how it works out over time and things often do change unexpectedly, but for now I see TP being used for a long time to come here on the FF.

As for the testing part... you are right to do that Steve, anyone who runs a site should always be testing any that are available so that whatever happens they are ready to make changes if and when the need arises.  :bigthumb:

I thought TP was going to shut down for good after the next version release.

Bloc has said that he will close TP.net and move any support to SMF only. But there may be support of a sort on TP.uk and Les is trying to get that going but that's still in the talking stages for now I guess.

As for the TP code... Bloc has indicated that he will keep it updated, but I think he is kind of burned out on it so we won't likely see any new features added.

Ah, I see now. Thanks for the update. :)

Still adk does look promising and seems to work better than the rest. :)

What about Simple Portal?  (I use it - and like it)

Or do you prefer to try something new..

Has wiz released a public version of his Dream Portal yet?  It is more javascript based rather then php (so I'm told).

As mentioned, my choice would likely be SP if forced to make a change... the rest don't measure up for a variety of reasons.
Dream Portal sounds promising, but there's no public version yet, they are up to RC1 in their beta testing though.

I am waiting to see what Dream Portal is going to be like as well. A lot of hype but nothing yet.
