Been doing some research on the issue and finding out anything on this nyud.net thing is kind of difficult, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.
In any case, here is some of what I've found:

The Coral Content Distribution Network
Quote
Our Goal

Are you tired of clicking on some link from a web portal, only to find that the website is temporarily off-line because thousands or millions of other users are also trying to access it? Does your network have a really low-bandwidth connection, such that everyone, even accessing the same web pages, suffers from slow downloads? Have you ever run a website, only to find that suddenly you get hit with a spike of thousands of requests, overloading your server and possibly causing high monthly bills? If so, CoralCDN might be your free solution for these problems!

Using Coral

Taking advantage of CoralCDN is simple. Just append

.nyud.net

to the hostname of any URL, and your request for that URL is handled by Coral! Try this page, or any other site:

A free content delivery network for your domain
Quote
Coral CDN is a free peer-to-peer like CDN. It has a huge network, with over 260 servers world wide it?s larger than most commercial CDNs. Using Coral CDN is as easy as appending .nyud.net to the hostname of any url and that request will be served by the Coral CDN. So if you had image on your site like so:

<img src=?/images/some_large_image.jpg? />

It would become:

Just for fun the image of the map is being served from in this way. For a site that features many large images or other static content using Coral can save tons of bandwidth and the request will be served from the closest server has the content in its cache. Unfortunately because of the volunteer nature of the system only the most popular content is widely distributed so often loading something from Coral actually takes longer than the origin server. Running a few tests with webpagetest.org shows that web pages from Coral CDN can take as much as twice as long to load. (test of nnucomputerwhiz.com vs test of nnucomputerwhiz.com.nyud.net)

Coral has other downsides besides speed since it is basically a proxy f0r any website many content filters and security software block the nyud.net domain rendering anything served using Corel inaccessibly. So some users that are behind a company firewall might just see broken jpegs.
Pros:

    Just requires changing url
Save on bandwidth and server load

Cons:

    Can be slow {...this we know!!!}
Restricted by content filters and security software

This topic has been supper slow, even compared to the rest of the forum. This extra slow down occurred after my last post and my suspicion was that it was related to the map image referred to in the text quote, I had included the map image by hot-linking to it.
So, as a test the linked image was removed and now the topic is back up to speed. ... in their text they brag about the image being served using the nyud thing.

Here's the image, but this time it's being served by TinyPic:

To me the obvious conclusion is that the image slowed down the topic because it was hosted on a server using the nyud technology.   :opps:

Then that would mean a server issue cause even just logging in causes this. Even reading topic or creating topics without images causes this. The images on here are those that we put on here. Thus, the server is redirecting the images, perhaps? But that doesn't make much sense either...

It also seems to happen at different times.

Besides, if you did not add any redirects to nyud.net, direct or otherwise, then it has to be the server.

I think I need to lay down after reading that Steve!

I may have found the fix!!!  :danban:

In the Highslide 4 SMF Modification there is a setting for 'Use Coral CDN as JS/CSS source' and by disabling that function the nyud stops being used.
So far it appears to have fixed the issue.

Yepp... that was it Les.

While taking another look over on SMF trying to find any possible info on the issue I came across this post:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=379200.msg2965091#msg2965091
i just installed this mod .. enabled it.. but i cant see any changes.. i posted some new pictures but i cant see any change..

And then this reply:

Turn off the "Use Coral CDN as JS/CSS source " option in the highslide control panel ...

Unfortunately that sometimes helps or hurts .. in this case its greatly delaying the page load.  Due to the way highslide is licensed there is not a nice google code alternative fpr a CDN so I attempted to use Coral  but its not all that great ATM.

I have not had a chance to look at the images yet.

So... knowing that 'Coral' and nyud were related, as noted earlier in this topic, me divined that turning off that function just might do the trick!
It appears to have done so.

Ah ha!!! I originally thought that one of the mods or a TP block was causing it but could not find a relationship between any of them.
