OXO Bamboo Cutting Board
« on: February 25, 2015, 09:32:55 AM »
I was getting tired of my lightweight cutting board which is made of plastic and it was starting to get a bit warped. I have a big heavy one but do not wish to use it for everyday use. So, I purchased this one Saturday:

http://www.oxo.com/p-415-large-bamboo-cutting-board.aspx

It looks and feel very nice...although I haven't cut anything on it yet!  :funny:

The instructions say to oil it with mineral oil (not vegetable oil which can go rancid!) every day or every other day for a week during first use. I prefer to oil it for a week then use it.  :rofl2

I will then oil it once a week for a month while using it and then once per month thereafter. I'll let you know this weekend how well I like it when I use it then with my newly sharpened knives that I've sharpened myself!  :bigteeth1: You can read about that here:

That looks to be a really nice board Steve.

Most of my kitchen/dining pieces, like bowls... ect get a good soaking coat of Mike Mahoney's Walnut Oil. It is food safe, nut allergy safe and gives the piece a nice soft glow.

Thanks. I've been working bamboo for a few years now at my job and was considering paying to have one espically made for me...may still do that. But a much less expensive option was to buy a cheaper one and see how that goes .vs the conventional wood cutting boards I've been getting.

This weekend I'll be using it after applying one more coat today. But so far, it looks really great!

I do know nuts go rancid after awhile of just sitting around. This got me wondering if walnut oil would do the same. So, I did a little research and found this:

Info like this would be nice to have on my recipe site...

The walnut oil that I mentioned is not the same as the kind found in grocery stores, here's some info from the site:

Quote
My walnut oil is 100% high linoleic acid walnut oil developed for woodworkers who want a non-toxic alternative to petroleum based polymerizing oils. What makes the oil unique is its ability to dry. I source my oil from trees in Northern California which are naturally high in two key fatty acids that help the oil polymerize. This is absent in culinary walnut oils. I also heat-treat the oil to remove the proteins that may cause allergic reactions to those predisposed to them.

Mineral oil, as you know, is petroleum based and for that reason I don't use it. The store version of walnut oils may go rancid and is not nut allergy safe.

LOL, I didn't mean the kind you cook with. And yes, the store version will do rancid. I buy things like this from kitchen supply stores or Lowe's or Home Depot where they have a different grade.

I posted that link for those wishing to know about the various types of oils they can or should use for wood products. ;) And do not use them for cooking!  :hah!:
