Sherlock, The Abominable Bride, watched it last night... liked it.

Sleuths, drugs and rock’n’roll. Sherlock combined period drama, feminism and a fiendish whodunit into a feature-length comeback that got 2016 off to a flying start – often quite literally, as our hero soared in aeroplanes and plummeted down waterfalls. If there’s a superior 90 minutes of television this year, then we’re in for a treat.

Starting the year with Conan Doyle’s consulting detective has become quite the tradition. This slaveringly awaited return was the third time a fresh episode has aired on New Year’s Day. Expected to draw blockbuster ratings of 13 million, making it the most-watched programme of the festive period, this was genuine “event TV” — getting a simultaneous release in cinemas and the United States. The episodes are normally set in modern day London, but this one is a flashback to the 1800's. The stars are Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman and to me they are the very best pairing yet in the Holmes-Watson duo. They do a season of three 90 minute episodes and then skip a year before doing the next season. They've covered some of the more exciting story lines from the books.
