Redecorated + The Base Camping Invitation!
« on: September 14, 2009, 02:23:11 AM »
I see someone's been busy moving all the furniture around in here.    :2funny:

Thought I went to the wrong address.   :wink2:

So how you doing Ken?

I've been enlisted as the Trek Master for the 2009 Holiday trek at Base Camp and was just wondering if you were interested in tagging along when the time comes?

We'll hit some place for about two weeks somewhere during the holidays to see if we can generate some interest in crunching and have a little fun in the process.

Am starting to keep my eyes open for places that might be the potential target.

Sounds great Spezi!
Conga-Rats on the Trek Master position.  :bigthumb:

Let me know when and where... meanwhile, I've been kind of lax lately doing my team stats and promoting the team, so maybe me better get busy.  :groan:

Good to hear.   :bigthumb:

I think you know basically how Base Camp works in that the guys/girls all have home teams but at times pick a place to converge on and stir up things for a couple of weeks.

If you have any ideas I'm always up for suggestions but mostly they like a place that has some active members posting so that there's a possibility of stirring things up and generating new recruits.

The last place we just did was kind of a bust since the forum has hardly anyone posting so though we had a bit of fun no new members were generated to my knowledge.

Naturally it's kind of common to think of PC Q&A, BitBenders, PC Review, etc but those have been recipients of multiple treks so it would be nice to find something new.

Once we get a few possibles we'll post a poll and the one with the most votes will be the victim provided they agree to an invasion when I contact their team.

I wouldn't sweat the stats thing unless there's enough people interested in seeing them.   :wink2:

I passed that task on to someone else at PCHF along with the Captaincy so that I'm free to move around.

On the bright side they've picked up about four new members in the last couple of weeks so that's good and even though they aren't a force to be reckoned with yet getting them started was a good idea in hindsight.

For the stats, I'll keep doing what we already have here and probably a little extra for the Base Camp thing but nothing full blown like I did on BitBenders.
As you mentioned some sites have had the BC boost several times before, so it would be nice to visit someone new... maybe we could find one through the recruiting topics on WCG?

Do the Base Campers have one 'central' forum where they post and talk about visits and such?

Yes there is a home base but it's pretty quiet when there isn't a trek in progress.  http://s2.excoboard.com/exco/index.php?boardid=3749

Sport told me that I need to start the ball rolling for the holiday trek around Nov 20th so there's plenty of time.

It would be good to keep an eye out for possible targets in the meantime though.

If you let me know what name you would use to sign up under I'll contact the Base Camp admin so that your registration can be approved.

I debated with myself about that one for a while.  :disted:

For some years now I've simply used my 'real' name, or some combo of my first and last name, but finally decided to go with a 'back in the day' nick... so BigFoot it is.  :belly:

I left PM's in a couple of places so hopefully the admin will activate it soon.

To me you'll always be BigFoot so that's a good choice.   :2tumb:

Thanks Spezi.  :bigthumb:

I tried to post a hello message in the board setup for guest posts, but it didn't work so I'll just wait for the activation.

Ps: Spezi, I was looking back through some of the old topics over on BitBenders for an answer to the question below but didn't find one, maybe you know?

Question from a potential new member:
Can you run SETI and WCG on the same PC and what would be impact on the PC and the two programs?

PPs: Guess I'll run the BigFoot nick here on the FF for a while.  :up2some:

To the best of my knowledge the answer to that question is yes you can.

I currently run WCG cancer work units on my CPU's but on the same computer I run Collatz work units on the GPU and as far as I know Seti does have GPU crunching so it is possible to do as long as a person has a graphic card that is up to the task meaning at least a 9800 series or so.

If a person used the Boinc client and attached themselves to multiple projects you could also do both but it would take much longer to accomplish a task since naturally the CPU cycles would be spread across multiple tasks though I'm not sure if they'd be running at the same time or not.

The graphics card would definitely be the way to go in that respect.

TLD just PM'd me and told me that you're good to go at Base Camp.

Give the "Check In" thread a try to make sure all is well and if not let me know and I'll get it fixed.

Welcome to Base Camp.   :2tumb:

Glad to hear that all is well and again welcome.

These are some good people who step up and do what they can to help out and encourage which I love to see.

I've even had one send me a couple of graphics cards to help further the effort.   :2tumb:

I don't know if I mentioned it to you or not but Adywebb has retired from crunching.   :undecided2:

He did this once before though and came back so hopefully when the time is right we might see him again.

You've most likely seen the stats I was doing on BitBenders before cutting my participation back? Did some pretty in depth tracking for a long while, starting back in the days when my team was still at PCQ&A and then at later at BBT. The Base Campers were included in some of the BBT charts of course.

Currently this is what I'm posting for the FF team:
