Quick Ban on Account Delete
« on: April 12, 2012, 10:06:52 AM »
A while back I turned off the 'reCAPTCHA for SMF' because there had been some mention of issues for real members trying to sign up for forums, but there is a trade-off. With reCAPTCHA turned off the spammers can now get in, so this mod, 'Quick Ban on Account Delete' looks to be useful.

Description
Adds delete triggers on delete account for admin. Helpful against spammers
Also makes it select topics and posts to delete by default.
Makes it faster to remove a spammer by allowing you ban and delete the account at the same time.

@Steve... just tried it and it seems to work as expected, I'll leave a couple of the spammers for you to play with.  :08:

It appears to not work in both directions.

If you go first to the 'delete this account' then you get the expected result but there is no box/function for adding any notes to the delete-ban... but, if you go to the 'ban' function first so that a note can be added to the ban then you don't get any of the delete options.

Support Topic

I just posted to the support topic to see if he, vbgamer, will add some text boxes to the mod.

Yes, I see what you're saying. Also, when you delete an account can't someone reuse that account? Is it kept in the database so it is not usable?

EDIT: There should also be a way to mass delete and ban them.

And a way to quickly see if they have duplicate accounts.  riteon

My understanding is that a simple delete of an account leaves it open to be used/tried again... thus the best option is to ban and then delete the account so that the spammer will not be able to reuse that account.

Good points.
I'm still waiting for an answer to my wish list post... maybe I should add your two items to the list.  :08:

Basically, that was what I was asking...if the account of a banned user is deleted can it be used again. But I guess not cause the info would still be in the ban logs in the db.

5 of the ones you've left for me had the following for hostname:

"different_ip".broadband.corbina.ru

The others had .ru in the email or something...Russians. Would be great to not have to check for duplicate accounts first.

For a really small forum like ours it's a minor irritation, but for someone who gets dozens or hundreds of signups a day it could be a real pain!

EDIT: Maybe we should just turn reCAPTCHA back on.  :hah:

Yeah, that's my point. I deal with forums that get a lot of registrations per day and do not have admin approval turned on.

I use the smf verification image and one verification question. You just have to make sure the answer to the question is not too hard for humans to guess but also the answer is not a number. That seems to stop 99% of them from even getting to "awaiting approval". Stop Spammer and httpBL mods usually get the rest. :)
