Updates Question
« on: April 20, 2015, 05:10:14 AM »
I was wanting to upload some pics but the tips are for operating systems that I am not currently using. Could you add a tip for re-sizing photos in windows 8.1? Thanks!

Hi BR... you are right, the images how-to is sadly out of date and I will try to refresh it soon.

Mean while, the image resize utility that I use on my Windows 8.1 laptop is Image Resizer for Windows. It adds a "Resize pictures" option into your right click menu, that way all you need do is right click an image and resize away.

Of course, I do things differently.  :whistle1:

I use Irfanview which is a fast and lightweight program. With it, you can view, convert, optimize, scan & print, create slideshows, batch processing, play movies and sounds and more!

What's "batch processing" you ask? Let's say you have a folder full of images. You choose the entire folder to do something like resize them or convert them all from .jpg to .png. You can even easily select the .jpg's and only process them by using "*.jpg" in the settings, for instance. You can even choose maybe to resize all of the images to a certain height or width only.

There are so many things you can do with this you'll wonder what you've ever done without it! Let's not forget the plugins you can add to do even more things!

I did use Image Resizer for some time until I found Irfanview. Been using that for about 5-7 years now, I think. You'll like it. :)

I do like it actually and use it regularly as well as using Image Resizer for Windows on a regular basis... they both work well and work well together.

Maybe the how-to should be expanded to include details on how to use Irfanview.

Well, lets start one here and work on it together... once it's complete we can copy and share between sites. Mick may be interested as well because of his Camera Craniums site.

Ok, but atm I'm busy helping Beast. He has a ton of malware, etc. on his PC. Been trying to help him out for the past 2 days via Team Viewer. :p That's why I'm slow to respond lately.

EDIT: and seems to get more each day...

I use Photoshop Elements or Digital Photo Pro for this kind of stuff. A lot of my members either use Photoshop, or Lightroom.  Doesn't hurt to have Tut's on alternative software though.

Curious about Image Resizer though.  I can see how handy it is for resizing images (Image size), how good is it for optimising those image for web use (File size) ?

It will typically render an image that is very web friendly Mick.

For example, this image was resized from my camera's file size of about 2MB down to 187KB and 1024x768.

Ken, hope you don't mind.  A quick and dirty edit to your pic.  Needed a bit of contrast and sharpening.

Now at 84 KiB

Just ask and I'll remove it.  I know some people get a bit touchy when others edit them. lol..

It's OK, I don't mind at all.

I've never gotten very deeply into photo editing, other than the resizing part. Your version looks much better than mine.  laughing7
