Typing this from Ubuntu desktop actually.  I decided to dump Vista which I had on a old laptop., and installed Ubuntu after reading this thread.  Thanks. ;)

It feels strange trying to use something which is very different from windows.

Glad to see you giving it a try Mick.

It is strange when you've just started using it.
Ubuntu is generally considered to be one of the best of all the Linux OS, imo it is the best and I've tried a lot of them. Ubuntu is similar to windows in many ways so getting a grip on it is much easier than some of the variations that are available.

Mick, have you ever tried Linux Format magazine? I've been reading it for years. I usually get the mag for the info and the latest distros. Then I don't have to download them.

Tanks Steve, will check that out.   It's my first time running anything other than windows, so it's a steep learning curve atm.

By the way, have you guys had any joy running Wine on Ubuntu? Any good, and do the windows programs behave?

Cool! You can do the same things in linux but it's just that most things are named differently. A neat trick in linux is that if you type something you can easily recall it by pressing the up or down arrows to cycle through the last things you typed!

Wine runs pretty good and you can also use CrossOver. It's paid software but runs windows software very well! wine started out for running games in linux but there is a Steam version of linux and it runs games a lot better!

Some of the larger Windows programs need Wine or CrossOver to run them. But there are some linux versions of program that are made for Windows.

Steve, as it was a old laptop that had windows vista pre installed and refused to update itself no matter what I did with it,  I decided to replace the OS completely with Ubuntu.  It's purely a test bed laptop so nothing to lose really in giving it a go.

Well last night I explored Linux Mint as a comparison.  Git to say I prefer it to Ubuntu, so I'm now typing this from Linux Mint.  :2cool!!

I didn't like the look of Ubuntu, the menu taking up screen space gown the left hand side etc.  Mint is much more like windows, has everything neatly along the taskbar, and all programs can be accessed from the menu button which is like the windows start button in the bottom L/H corner.  For me it just has a better look and feel.

Edit: Added screenshots showing desktop with notepad++ and Adobe Elements (used for these screenshots) installed. Both windows programs.

You can move the taskbar in Ubuntu and Mint to any side of the screen you choose.

Mint is very nice. I like how it looks and works. However, my fav is Suse...mostly for it's features.

After thrashing abound a bit I ended up loading EasyPeasy on my 8" Acer netbook. So far it''s working very well, the footprint is much smaller than regular Ubuntu so it's lots faster because with only 8gigs total HDD space, every bit adds to the load.

I haven't heard of that one but have heard of these 3 over the years, although I haven't tried them myself. I've read about them several times in Linux Format.

I've played around with all three of those, with mixed results. I think the main problem has always been the Acer and not the various versions of Linux. With only 8gigs of space on the hard drive the prospects are not that great.
